10 Things I Wouldn’t Skip When Rediscovering Your Style in Your 40s

There’s something about reaching your 40s that makes you pause and rethink your style. Maybe it’s life changes — kids growing up, work shifts, or even the rollercoaster of perimenopause — or maybe it’s just that what used to work no longer feels like you.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. I’ve been there too, standing in front of a wardrobe full of clothes that didn’t feel right anymore. That’s why I put together my top 10 things I wouldn’t skip when rediscovering your style in your 40s. These aren’t about chasing trends or following strict rules — they’re about finding yourself again through what you wear.
Here’s my list:
1. Try new styles that didn’t suit you before
Your body, lifestyle, and confidence shift over time. What didn’t feel right in your 20s or 30s might just be perfect now.
2. Let go of what no longer works
That favourite dress you’ve kept for years? If it doesn’t feel good anymore, it’s okay to say goodbye.
3. Find the colours that bring you to life
The right colours don’t just make you look good, they make you feel good. Discovering your palette can be a game-changer.
4. Refresh your accessories
Sometimes all it takes is a new pair of earrings, a scarf, or a great belt to breathe new life into old outfits.
5. Don’t be afraid to tuck in
It’s a small styling trick, but it can completely change your proportions and give you a polished finish.
6. Know the pants rise that suits you best
High-rise, mid-rise, low-rise — finding the cut that works for your shape makes all the difference.
7. Look for inspiration everywhere
Pinterest, Instagram, a stylish friend, even people-watching in a café. Keep your eyes open — you never know what might spark an idea.
8. Forget the style rules for over 40s
Who says you can’t wear short skirts or sleeveless tops? Style doesn’t come with an age limit.
9. Dress for you
Your lifestyle matters. Clothes should work for the life you’re living, whether that’s in the office, at home, or on holiday.
10. Know your body shape and proportions
Understanding how to balance your frame makes styling so much easier (and more fun).
Rediscovering your style in your 40s isn’t about starting over — it’s about keeping what works, letting go of what doesn’t, and being open to new ideas. This phase of life is the perfect time to take back your style, and with it, a little piece of yourself.
